The Influential Nonprofit Episode 90: Maryanne Dersch: Developing Your Donor Pipeline
Fundraising is more than just asking for money.
The process goes as follows: awareness, interest, connection, and action.
The action may be giving money or volunteering time. Each activity must fit into one of these categories.
Awareness is indirect contact. It can be from social media, publicity, speaking, or any other event that generates broad-level awareness. Interest is when they know us and like us. It could be driving them to the website, or having them join a major event. Interest is moving from indirect to direct.
There must be a call to action in each of these things that get them to transition from one part of the process to the next.
Don’t skip right to the ask. Raise awareness, generate interest, foster connectedness, and then call them to action.
There's awareness, interest, connectedness, and then action. Each of our activities needs to fit in one of these things.
They have to know you to like you, they have to like you to love you, and they have to love you to invest in you.
Is this helping generate awareness, interest, connection, or action? If not, we can let it go. Because if we’re not doing that, then why are we doing it?
