Stoking your audience is all about creating a community that’s centered on authentic engagement that leads to movement. Whenever you post anything or tell a story, tag and involve people in your community who might be connected to that story. Start a conversation.
The goal of stoking your audience is to cultivate believers. Believers don’t only bring in donations, they bring social capital and social proof, they bring stories, lived experiences, their own time and effort, and their network.
Stoking creates an authentic community. An authentic community is one where everyone’s voice matters and the mission moves forward in a way that’s authentic, vulnerable, safe, and real through the collective efforts of everyone within the community.
Building a culture of storytelling in your nonprofit and finding ways for people to give you that information will impact your community in a significant way. Apply a more generative approach rather than an extracting approach when it comes to stories. The more raw and authentic the story, the more it will create connections.
It's not enough just to syndicate, you’ve got to stoke… Stoking is getting in there and creating a conversation about what you want to talk about
We're trying to move from thinking about ‘how do we cultivate a donor’ to ‘how do we cultivate a believer’, that is a 2.0 level of thinking in this modern era. Believers bring more to the table than donors.
The stories already exist, you just need to ask for them - so this generative approach, rather than extracting approach, is really interesting.
